President’s Message

On Saturday, June 11, Pittsburgh Chapter SAR, in conjunction with the DAR, held its annual Flag Day Ceremony at beautiful, historic Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh.  It was our 87th consecutive Flag Day Ceremony.  Over 140 eighth grade students from 36 local schools received Good Citizenship awards.  First place awardees received a certificate and a medal.  Second place awardees received a certificate and a pin.  Chapter officers Paul Kennedy, Charles Coon, Joe Corrigan, Tom Edwards, Stan Foster, Sid Moore, and Rennick Steele participated.  Chairperson Bill McKim organized and presided over the event, along with DAR chair Catherine Matlack.  Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, as he has done for the last several years, read a proclamation and personally congratulated each student who received an award.  A short film on the history of Old Glory was shown.  The North Allegheny High School Air Force Junior ROTC Color Guard presented the flags.  Those students also received a certificate from SAR.  Michael Merryman of SAR George Washington Chapter sang the “Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.”

Our chapter will host the PASSAR summer Board of Management meeting on August 5th and 6th at the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott.  Mark your calendars now.  We need strong attendance from our chapter for this event.  The meeting includes a Friday night Reception at 6 p.m. and Dinner at 7 p.m., Saturday BOM meeting from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and Saturday Luncheon at noon.  The Saturday Luncheon features a presentation by Jennifer Ford, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Fort Bedford Museum on “George Washington and Bedford: Past, Present, and Future.”

The Saturday morning Ladies Program features Dru Simeone, Pittsburgh Chapter DAR Regent, and is entitled “Pioneers of Pittsburgh Preservation.”  Pastries, coffee, and tea will be available.

Registration at the hotel lobby is from 3 to 5 p.m. on Friday or 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday.  Along with strong attendance we will need volunteers to greet incoming participants at the Marriott.  Please contact Bill McKim or myself (paulfkennedy @aol.com) if you can help.

The Borough of Aspinwall has been selected for the 2016 Flag Award.  This patriotic little town along the Allegheny River just staged its 87th consecutive Memorial Day Parade, with hundreds of flags flying theoughout the borough.  Two large flags stand at the borough building.  Chapter President Paul F. Kennedy will present the award at the Borough Council meeting on July 13th.  It will be covered by the local newspaper The Herald.

The 2016 Knight Essay Contest was won by Nathan Goldner of Armstrong High School for his essay “War Time Advantages of the American Long Rifle.”

Eagle Scout Chairman Thomas Edwards presented eight Eagle Scout certificates in June and attended the ceremony at Northmont Presbyterian Church.

ROTC Chairman Paul Scull presented ROTC certificates to local students in April.

Membership Chairman William Boswell reports four new members and one new transfer this year, with several more in the pipeline.

Earlier this year, February 20, we held the George Washington’s Birthday Luncheon at the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott.  Over 60 people attended.  Dr. Bill Choby, Portraying George Washington, and Tom Anke, portraying the Native American “Half King,” provided an entertaining and informative glimpse of local colonial history.

On April 30 the Spring Heritage Meeting was held at River Forest Country Club.  J. Rennick Steele of our chapter presented an interesting lecture on “Massy Harbison, Frontier Heroine.”

Please check out and “like” our Facebook page which is listed under “Sons of the American Revolution Pittsburgh Chapter.”

I encourage any chapter member to attend events and get involved in chapter activities.
